JUST IN: Injury hits Super Eagles as star player is ruled out of Brazil clash
The Super Eagles will be without Torino of Italy defender Ola Aina when they take on the Selecao of Brazil in an international friendly in Singapore on Sunday.
Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr named a 23-man squad last month for the game, with Aina being one of six defenders named for the friendly match against the five-time world champions.
However, former Chelsea defender, Aina, suffered an injury in a domestic accident and has this been ruled out of the game on Sunday.
“Torino of Italy wing back Ola Aina is out of Sunday’s international friendly against Brazil. He picked up an injury after a domestic accident and will not be available. #SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong,” the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed via its official twitter handle on Wednesday morning
It remains unclear if a replacement will be called up with only four days left before game, but a source at the NFF has told Opera News that it remains a possibility.
“Something is being worked on (as regards a replacement for Aina) but nothing is certain for now,” the source said.
The game against Brazil will be the first time in 16 years both countries will meet at full international level. The last time both countries met at full international level was in 2003, as part of the opening of the Abuja National Stadium (now known as the Moshood Abiola Stadium).
The match ended 3-0 in favour of the Selecao.
