15 Habits That Could Ruin Your Relationship

15 Habits That Could Ruin Your Relationship

Being in a healthy and fulfilling relationship is one of the most blissful experiences any one can ever have. It boasts amazing things such as sharing intimate moments, cuddling, sharing sweet text messages and even taking a warm shower together among other things. However, there are a few habits that can tear down a good relationship and make things unbearable if left unchecked. Below we look at 15 habits that could hurt your healthy relationship if left unchecked.

1. Trying to Change or Improve Your Partner
Trying to change your partner is one of the most annoying habits in a relationship. No one is and can ever be perfect. For this reason, trying to radically change your partner will most likely result in devastating consequences. It’s okay to improve your partner in minor aspects such as making the bed after waking up in the morning, cleaning the table after dinner or wearing a clean pair of socks every day. However, trying to induce major personality changes can be harmful.

2. Finding Faults in One’s Family
We all grow up differently because we are raised in different cultures and family setups. This means you’re likely to see something different or unusual in your partner’s family. Some things your partner’s family do or say might even seem weird. However, do not try to find faults in them or criticizing them every time they do things in a way you’re not accustomed to. Doing so will only create a rift between you, your partner and their family.

3. Excessive PDA
It’s okay to talk about your partner in public once in a while. However, too much public display of affection (PDA) can be harmful. Studies reveal that most couples who display excessive acts of affection in public do so as a way of compensating for a lack of real communication. Stick to quick kisses and holding hands, and save the intimate stuff for your bedroom.

4. Fighting in Public
Apart from excessive public display of affection, arguing or fighting with your partner in public makes everyone around feel awkward. Find time to sort your issues out in private. This means you will both be free to open up and talk about everything bothering you without everyone learning about your dirty linens.

5. Not Talking it Out
No one is a mind-reader, unless you have some special abilities that the rest of us lack. Therefore, whenever a problem comes up or you partner does something you are not okay with (and vice versa), it’s advisable to speak up. Rather than let feelings bottle up, talk about it on time to reduce future conflicts and relationship anxiety. Be gentle and soft-spoken when addressing such issues because doing so with sharp tone can make things worse.

6. Keeping Score
Once in a while your partner will make a mistake or you often cover certain expenses for both of you. Keeping score on how many times they have wronged you or cheated or even the number of times you’ve paid for dinner or cab isn’t the wisest of things to do. Doing so can cause unnecessary tension.

7. Being Melodramatic
Being melodramatic is another habit known to kill many relationships. Do not create unnecessary drama simply because your partner did something that pissed you off or broke your heart. If your partner forgets to clean the dishes or take out the garbage, creating a scene will only serve to create more mess instead of finding a quick solution.

8. Spying on Your Partner
Trust is one of the key cornerstones of a healthy and long-lasting relationship. Trust your mate and respect their privacy. Do not snoop through their emails, texts or bedroom drawers. As long as your relationship is not a secret, allowing them to have their privacy and trusting them is very beneficial.

9. Taking Them for Granted
Never take your partner and the things they do for you for granted. It’s vital to know and understand that you’re in a relationship with a special person. Show gratitude and pay attention to them and their needs so as to make your relationship stronger.

10. Being Insecure
Being insecure in your relationship has been shown to pose a lot of risks, both for your relationship and health. Being insecure means you doubt your partner and you lack self-confidence, which are detrimental for any relationship. On the other hand, women with relationship insecurities are at a greater risk of health problems such as weakened immune system.

11. Constant Comparisons
Do not compare your partner with your ex. Your ex is an ex for a reason, and it’s best to let the past rest in peace. Comparing your current partner with your former lover is likely to lead to unrealistic expectations, and that can end up hurting your relationship.

12. Holding Each Other Ransom
As we have mentioned earlier, we all make mistakes. It’s good to pardon each other and be understanding. But if you start holding each other ransom for simple mistakes then that spells doom for your relationship. Women are often the ones who hold men ransom, often denying their partners intimacy as a punishment for their mistakes.

13. Lying
No lie is a small lie. Constant lies pile to the extent of ruining a healthy relationship that was once built on trust and honesty. Try to avoid little lies as much as possible if you don’t want to lose your partner’s trust.

14. Doing Everything Together
This one might sound lame, but doing everything together can ruin your relationship. Everyone needs some time alone to recharge and reflect on personal stuff. Enjoying alone time is healthy for your relationship.

15. Poor Timing of Discussions
Issues such as relationship expectations and financial plans ought to be discussed at the right time and place. Bringing up such topics when one is stressed or when making love can be detrimental. It’s advisable to set up time to talk about such issues when both parties are relaxed.

Avoid these things if you wish to have a healthy and long-lasting relationship. Above all, let trust and honesty be the cornerstones of your relationship and you will have little to worry about.
